Integrative Vocal Training

Introduction

It is well known that a successful presentation, musical or otherwise, is only for 20% dependent on the content. The remaining 80% is the way in which the content is presented. It is the attitude, the ease of presentation, the inspiration, and the expression which are important. If you are interested in the remaining 80%, then Integrative Vocal Training is for you.

Integrative Vocal Training (where we use the German abbreviation "IST" Integratives Stimmtraining) is a holistic system developed by Romeo Alavi Kia to train and guide singers, instrumentalist and speakers (e.g. actors or public speakers), to develop their natural "voice". It is another vital tool in music medicine.

Our vocal and our musical expression are not merely a collection of techniques. In essence they are an expression of our self. They show our strengths and our weaknesses. They express our emotions and our ability to function in every day life. One can say they show our total personality. IST focuses exactly on that point, to develop our instrument, our body and our voice, as an expression of our personality. It is based in scientific grounds and careful examination of individual experience. This holistic approach to the development of one's musical/vocal potential is totally new in the field of music pedagogy.

Maike has been invited several times to introduce Integrative Vocal Training at NIDA in Sydney and has given workshops at CIT in Canberra. At the Centre for Body and Vocal Health she works in one-on-one sessions with her clients, but she also gives courses, does group sessions, works as a recording coach and as German Language Vocal Coach.

"Integrative Vocal Training" for Singers

Whether you are an classical singer, a pop, blues, or jazz singer, whether you're a professional singer, a hobbyist, or even just starting out, you can greatly benefit from what "Integrative Vocal Training" has to offer. It will teach you a very individualistic approach to singing.

Integrative Vocal Training is based in a profound knowledge about functional anatomy of the body in general and the voice box in particular. Integrative Vocal Training connects you to your individual breathing rhythm, which is a main factor in developing one's voice. You will learn techniques to produce sound without hurting any structure in your voice box. It also includes intensive body-work to change patterns which are opposing the free and natural flow of your voice. The results, in addition to a free and easy flowing voice, are an increased personal expression in general and increased authenticity in your musical expression as well.

Using your voice @ work?

  • Actors
  • News readers
  • Radio announcers
  • Voice-over artists
  • Sports coaches
  • Teachers
  • Managers
But even though we all use our voice constantly, we are hardly ever receive any training or coaching in order to use it properly.

You may directly notice problems with your voice, like hoarseness, weakness or even pain. Or you may simply find that you don't want to talk anymore because talking is so tiring. Maybe you are 'easily ignored' during meetings, which doesn't boost your confidence; you may perceive your voice as unsteady or unpleasant or you just don't like the sound of it; maybe there is too much breath on your voice, or you may think your voice is not sexy enough. Integrative Vocal Training provides the knowledge to help you understand your current situation and the tools to change that situation for your benefit, whatever the problem is.

"Integrative Vocal Training" for Instrumentalists

Eventhough the title "Integrative Vocal Training" would not suggest it to be applicable to instrumentalists, it surely is. Functional anatomy and the holistic principles used in the body-work are extremely beneficial for any musician, including instrumentalists. Because of the high demands on the body, it is important to understand the functional anatomy of your posture and your movements during performance and training. The connection to your individual breathing rhythm is vital for playing an instrument with ease and grace. It increases your personal expression in general as well as the authenticity in your musical expression.
