Body Work

Introduction

Maike is a qualified physio/massage/shiatsu therapist trained in Europe. She is also a movement trainer and therapist and works with the concept of Spiraldynamik®, the art and science of human movement coordination.

In Germany Maike specialized in orthopedic rehabilitation, including sports and work/music injuries. Her 25 years of experience incorporates work in hospitals and clinic settings. When she came to Australia she left her own established clinic in Munich and since then she operates from her own clinic in Canberra (now the Centre for Body and Vocal Health).

Spiraldynamik®

Maike is the first therapist to bring Spiraldynamik® to Australia. Spiraldynamik® is a three dimensional movement concept, which aims to achieve anatomically healthy movement. It was developed by the Swiss doctor Christian Larsen and the French physiotherapist Yolante Deswarte. Christian Larsen himself describes it as "a three dimensional user's manual for the human body". With the physiotherapist Christian Heel he opened the" Institut fur Spiraldynamik" in Zurich/ Switzerland. (links) There Spiraldynamik is now part of the foundation for anatomy studies in physiotherapy and medicine. It is useful in therapy, for rehabilitation of all orthopedic conditions, in training and tuition - dance, athletics, art, yoga and music.

In music medicine this concept is extremely useful to prevent future problems and to treat already existing ones. Understanding anatomy and the knowledge how to change ones habits and patterns for already existing or future problems, is the key for a musician not to become dependent on therapists.

Spiraldynamik® = "Spiral dynamics"?

Eventhough the German term "Spiraldynamik" would be translated as "spiral dynamics" in English, we do however not use this term. Spiral dynamics is already in use for a psychological system which has no relationship to Spiraldynamik®, but because the German term has been in use in Europe for over 20 years we decided to use this untranslated for international recognizability.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Treatment of problems related to your skeleton, joint capsules, ligaments, tendons or muscles are part of orthopedic rehabilitation. Maike works with acute injuries or support after surgery, and helps with degenerative problems. After an initial assessment a decision is made on a treatment plan, the goal of which always is becoming independent again from therapist and therapy.

Massage

Maike uses different types of massage depending on what is needed. This varies from relaxation to remedial massage, which includes sports massage and frictions. She also does pregnancy massage.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu generally refers to a therapy system of Japanese origin based on a meridian system similar to what is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Maike practices a branch of shiatsu known as Zen Shiatsu, which was established by Shizuto Masunaga. Zen shiatsu directly works on imbalances in the energy system of the body which are seen as the cause for our health problems. Zen shiatsu serves as an excellent therapy on its own or as supporting therapy for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture, or even in Western Medicine as part of the rehabilitation and prevention program.
